My homeboy Mikey Fresh who writes for The Source asked me to do this interview. This kid does amazing work in NYC, check out his blog at www.neversatisfied.net for the latest news, funk about fashion x hiphop
Name: Nance Vu
Where do you represent: Amsterdam baby!
Favorite fashion brands: There are WAY too many, but River Islands is one of my fav stores.
Favorite Music artists: too many to name
Worst pickup line you heard this week: I got this random message on myspace recently…
“ I want to train my Dutch, and I have chosen you as my teacher!,” thought it was funny..
NS: Nancy, so Neversatisfied picked you as our first feature for “Lifestyles of the young & hustlin’ ” section, so what do you do for money or just to live?
Nancy: First off, thanx for picking me as your first feature, very appreciated. Well, I just started to branch out on my own a year ago, and now I’m freelancing full time all over the place doing event planning, artistbooking, to PR, etc.
NS: How did you get into the industry, and personally do you think it was harder for you because you are a woman… a very pretty woman at that??
Nancy: Haha..I fell into the industry actually by pursuing a degree in PR and marketing. I started got an internship at ‘Connecting The Scene’ , which is like the biggest urban community company in Europe. This allowed me to get introduced to the entertainment industry.
I think being a woman in general poses challenges in life that men don’t face. It’s tougher because people don’t always take you seriously. But all you have to do is hustle harder! Lol.. You run into so many obstacles especially in the entertainment industry wether you’re male or female and from what I have experienced people try to pull you down. You have to develop a thick skin. Keep moving to the next and the next and the next. Be creative and, I’m devoted to make my mark in the industry.
NS: So you’ve pretty much worked all over the world, where is your favorite city, and is there somewhere you haven’t been to yet that you want to visit.
Nancy: I’d have to say NYC is definitely one of them. The city of neon and chrome and another would have to be LA of course. Life never stops there, there’s never a moment of boredom. Love the people, weather and all that good stuff! Japan is definitely on the next episode. Hopefully this year.
NS: You’ve brought Asian artists like Jin and Far East Movement to Europe and any future plans to work with these guys?
Nancy: I’m always open to work with these cats again. The FM boys are like my fam! Very proud to see how they finally getting the mainstream attention they deserve. I heard some major labels are interested to sign them. So yeah, Europe tour part deux could be coming anytime soon.
NS: Can we go on a date… I mean what do you think the next big trend in music or fashion will be?
Nancy: Haha sure anytime! In Europe, house/dance music has become the new big ‘urban’ movement. This dj I work with, who goes by the name of Real El Canario, came to Amsterdam a few years ago and set off this trend in the Netherlands. People here call it ‘eclectic’ but he simply considers it to be ‘Hip-Hop’. He opened a new door for the club scene, that inspired many dj’s to enter.
I believe the next big trend will be ‘Urban’ artist reaching out and working with dance/house producers. It’s actually already happening and slowly taking over the trill.
NS: Okay, Nance I think I’ve bothered you enough, what big plans do you have for this year?
Nancy: Lets say I’m working on this big project, can’t say too much about it just yet! But you will be the first to know..promise J
